Bessel van der Kolk (M.D., born 1943) is a lifelong researcher of the effects of traumatic experiences on the human body. He set up one of the first clinical/research centers in the United States for treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder in civilians and was the first to study selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that affect it. The focus of his work remains on researching potential treatment modalities and sharing his findings with professionals.
