The father of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 to Jewish parents in present-day Czech Republic but spent most of his life in Vienna, where he set up clinical practice in 1886 and became an affiliated professor at the university in 1902. Winner of the Goethe Prize in 1930, Freud was one of the first people in history to make serious research of the human mind and to explore the unconscious.
