He serves as president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), a research nonprofit based in Berkeley, California. In 2014 he co-authored a paper that introduced the term 'AI alignment.' He is also co-author, with Eliezer Yudkowsky, of the 2025 book 'If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All.'
