The sixth of seven children in a middle-class family in Phnom Penh, she spent her childhood in Khmer Rouge labor camps. She escaped from Cambodia at the age of 10, soon after Vietnam invaded the country. Ever since then, she has lived in the United States. She has written a trilogy of memoirs: “First They Killed My Father,” “Lucky Child,” and “Lulu in the Sky.”
